And in no small part due to you Tom, thanks so much for your help and the mainboard, I'm very grateful.

Seems have been down to bad connections in the main plug and the power plug for the HDD, which was making and breaking and causing the PSU to hiccup. Gave them all a clean and a tweak.

Memory module installed and working too now:

I need to fit a replacement battery so need to find a cr2032 holder, sure I have one somewhere.

Yay! Time to diagnose the original board? ;-)

By the way, to boot off the internal ROM it's Cmd-Option-X-O or set it in the "Startup Disk"
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

Doesn't this seem to be a bit of a pattern here??
rubber_jonnie wrote: 12 Dec 2021 19:09 Well, I had a look at the Speccy today, all set for a fair session of troubleshooting.

As it turned out, the diagnosis took less than 30 minutes, it was a broken power lead just inside the strain relief of the PSU.

Tip: Next machine you do, check the power leads first.

To be fair, the Spectrum was just a failed pair of wires, not the connector.

Not quite the same, the Mac has a 14 pin plug internally and I had already reflowed the connections for that and all other stuff, like video and sync to the neck board too. Plus the logic board was actually, and still is, dead.

The HDD power was odd, it kept pulsing and bringing the PSU down, but as soon as I sorted the Molex plug, it started behaving.

It seems that bad connections were rife in it though, as it took me another 30 minutes to clean the memory board and SIMM connections before I got anything other than a sad Mac.

Need to give the FDD a service I think, and add a non exploding battery type!

Yeah, I've seen a lot of that on Adrian's Digital Basement.

Annoyingly this morning I powered it on and got a checkerboard pattern, so it seems I'm not done with it yet, or it's not done with me!
