Is the Atmel programmer the same as for the atmega328 etc? As I have one of those somewhere

These chips are like 100pin using JTAG. Totally different programming tech than gals. You have to use the correct jtag programmer by atmel.

A eetools chipmax2 will do them. It pretty much does anything...

The chipmax2 doesn't .. it does the ATF16/20/22Vxx, ATV750/1500/2500 .. but not the ATF15xx which have their proprietary algo. They require a specific programmer , the ATDH1150USB (which as you can imagine only does these and nothing else).

I beg to differ.. see screen shot of selections. If its listed it programs the device. Never had one that was listed not work. Maybe you have old info or old software?. Not sure if I have the adaptor but that's secondary to the programmer being capable.

Excuse the crappy pic but I couldn't find the snipper on windoze and didn't want to waste any time on it. I use it as a hammer and only use it when absolutely necessary,,

How does the programmer interface to the ATF15xx series ? must have JTAG cable?, as inserting the SMT TQFN package be near impossible into the programmer..

There a column that lists adaptors, I have some but haven't checked the the adaptor specified. It also burns the cplds for bf's boards but I'm going to use the Raspberry so I can check them after soldering as his video shows.
