Different kind of patient on the bench today:

IMG_20240313_090559.jpg

It's a little drilling/grinding/cutting tool that I bought many moons ago, but the original battery, the silver 3 cell item behind the 18650, is long dead. I have a larger 'fake' Dremel that I got from Maplin, but it's a bit large for some contexts and the power lead is a pain.

So I have a USB C charging circuit and I just need to mod the charge port to accept the shape of the new socket (The original was a barrel jack) and wire it all up and we should be good to go.

First tests show that the 18650 powers it just fine, so it'll be good to get the old thing running again. Then I'll have 3 sizes of grinding tools for heavy, medium and light work, as I also have a nail grinding tool that is perfect for lightweight jobs.

You can't have too many tools and I do like reusing old stuff rather than chucking it :)

Looks good to me! Reuse is better than recycle.

All finished:

My not entirely accurate but works charging port mod:

IMG20240314094816.jpg

And the couple of holes added so I can see the charge state - red=charging, blue=full.

I didn't take any internal pics as I used rather more hot glue than is pretty...

Works great though, and given I got 20 USB C charging modules and 4 18650 batteries for just £12, the overall cost to repair was very low and I still have unused parts left over for other projects.

Did you make provision to take it apart for the next battery change?

Well, my parcel purgatory is nearly over :)

I'm just waiting on the uKenbak-1 from adwaterandstir (Same folks who do the Altairduino), which has cleared UK customs, but is waiting to go into the Royal Mail systems, and I may have bought a faulty PS2 from eBay...

In my defence it was only £15 including delivery, so not too bad, and that should be here in the next day or so as it's with the local delivery office.
