OVer 20 years I don't think any chair has lasted more than several months. I think just bad designs. I mean like 1" piston top on a large seat base creates a huge pressure point, and that's where it snaps.rubber_jonnie wrote: Sat Oct 07, 2023 10:55 am I've honestly never had a chair fail on me, other than the gas strut fail, I bet you're really having races on it and hitting corners hard, otherwise I don't know how you're breaking it![]()

I've just replaced my office chair, it was probably about 6 years old, but only because the padding had squashed flat and was causing me pain on the back of my legs, and we have 2 other office chairs that are as old or possibly older, and none have failed like yours.exxos wrote: Sat Oct 07, 2023 10:58 amOVer 20 years I don't think any chair has lasted more than several months. I just don't get why yours fails so easily. I'm no lightweight, but I don't seem to be able to break any of mine. Unless yours had a bad design to begin with.

Re: exxos blog - random goings on
Similarly, my chair upstairs is, I think, about 20 years old and the one I now have in the outbuilding is 1992 vintage. The upholstery fails first.
The steel in the chairs I've seen should handle about half a ton static load, but would fail at lower loading if constantly flexed. I seem to remember that fatigue can be caused by 30% of failure load if flexed a large number of times.

Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

So back to everyone's favourite segment, chair fail!
Just above the yellow line is where it has cracked completely.
The whole welded mess section I am going to hacksaw off, hopefully tomorrow some time. Then I'll start working on a 3-D printed block adapter thingy.

You must really love that chair

Re: exxos blog - random goings on
Just a theory...but maybe the chair would last a bit longer if it wasn't constantly being used to beat people over the head?

Bugger!! Managed to snap the end of my "persuasion screwdriver"
Had to bring out the power of "swear and hammer" to get the thing apart.
Will have to go looking for the angle grinder or the dremel tomorrow to saw the block out.
