Final note on this topic, I measured the output on the +5V line, and when first powered I get almost 8V output before it stabilizes to 4.99. I suspect this is what burns the R801.

Replacing this with an ATX PSU, there is no power spike, but I get only 4.6V on the +5V line under load and the 330 doesn't boot properly.

So... bottom line is, you need a beefy PSU that doesn't produce spikes (perhaps turn on the PSU before the console). The A500 doesn't seem to mind the power spikes like the CD32.
