If I said what patch it'd probably answer the question, LOL

Any chance you can see between a good card and one of the cards that don't let the machine boot if there is a short on one of the pins?

Can do, any ideas which pins I should check?

Yes I have Paul, if it works on a PC, it happily works on the ST hard drive wise, just these CF cards that are being difficult.

Largest HD tried is 160gb Seagate. Got about 10 of them.

PhilC wrote: Fri Apr 26, 2019 4:03 pm Finally had 5 mins to test the 3 cheap and cheerful 4gb CF cards that arrived this week. They are all from different vendors on Aliexpress and work fine in my USB adaptor on the PC.

This Is where it gets odd again. Putting any of the 3 new CF cards into the IDE adaptor and my Mega refuses to boot, again doesn't even get as far as setting 50hz on the monitor. And this is without the power applied to the CF adaptor just with the nee cards inserted.

So back to another old 2GB card I have and its recognised right away and happy as Larry.

I know I could have 3 duff cards but it would seem unusual when they work great on the PC?
This sounds like the symptom of that card you sent me ?

But you also said that card you sent me worked great on the PC, and it failed miserably... I think while it may actually work reliable in some cases, I think if the card is used extremely slow, as in way slower than any card would ever normally go, it probably will work....

But like I said, with HDTUNE fails miserably so I suggest you try these cards on the PC with that program...

That is what I thought too exxos but would seem strange that three new cards would do the same.

I've just downloaded HDtune trial and have done a benchmark and am doing a health scan on the first one and it comes up as ok, whereas the last one I sent you was bad on the health scan wasn't it?

Will test the other two next.

If they all pass OK, then I'll get the meter out and take measurements and see if I can find anything unusual.

Ok, so this is what i've found by running HD Test and by metering out the connections on the 44pin IDE as it connects to the IDE to CF adaptor.

I duplicated the tests that exxos has suggested with known good cards that work on the ST and the new ones.

All cards fail the erase / random fill / verify test and I believe this is due to access speed. My PC is trying to write and read at about 144MB/s but the cards typically can't do more than 10 -20MB/s, so It would be interesting to see what the card I sent to exxos does when benchmarked.

Below is my 4GB card compared to the three new cards wen measuring resistance to GND on the Mega.
