This arrived in the post yesterday - PC Engine & CD-ROM 2

Post by PhilC »

Morning all,

So I can't really blame @HigashiJun and @rubber_jonnie for persuading me to buy this as I've wanted one for a few years but for the purpose of this topic, let's blame them anyway

This arrived in the post yesterday afternoon but by that time I'd ran out of energy etc.

It's a bit grubby and I don't know if it works but we shall find that out shortly. Firstly I've got to find out what power supply it needs and yes, you've guessed it, the dataplate is in Japanese.

So far it seems pretty well made.

It has a locking slide on the front that keeps everything together and an electric handle at the back.. and fortunately it's got the power required written next to the power socket.

Happy to take partial blame @PhilC :)

These are amazing consoles when you consider they are essentially 8 bit. Great find to have one with the CD drive too :)

I expect it'll clean up lovely and you'll enjoy some amazing games on it.

So just found a power supply that will plug in to the Interface unit. All I get when switched on is a light blue screen. I presume it's pretty much like a mega drive and won't do a thing without a cartridge plugged in.

The CD drive wirrrrs away but doesn't spin, so will take that apart next but hopefully my first cart will be here in a day or so.

There are some units being sold cheap spares/repairs on ebay with "Only gets a light blue screen". If you work out what it is (e.g. needs HU card) then I might have a bid.

How can we convince you :)

With the CD attached surely they boot to the CD-loader with no HU card installed? Did CD-based consoles come with "blank" or "OS" HU cards?

@alexh it came with just what you see in the photos.

The cd drive has the usual broken middle sprocket, so I'll have to try find one of those.

In the meantime I did a recap on the PC Engine and fixed a few dry joints oh and this mess too.
