I used to have a PSS780. It works fine with the ST.

Just be aware the PSS 780 is not General MIDI compliant (it precedes that), percussion is on channel 16 and the voices don't map to the IDs printed on the front of the keyboard, but instead to those printed on the front of its predecessor the PSS 680.

Hello! Thanks for the replies, good to know you have a PSS-780 working, BW!
Its simply Midi in to Midi Out, and same again, two cables from ST to Keyboard, I am not using the through port on the keyboard.
Cubase tested v 3.1. Disabled MIDI through on Cubase Prefreences seems to make no difference.
I have looked at a couple of other sequencer packages and I think they are affected too, but not spent enough time with them to be sure.
If I connect just one cable (ST OUT to PSS-780 MIDI IN) then Cubase will play back. I can see the O bar going up and down to any recorded notes.
If I connect both cables, then both the I and the O bar show noise levels, the whole thing seems to get confused either the keyboard becomes unresponsive, or the ST does.
Individually, they work fine for in and out. Firmware on the keyboard is 120, I think thats the latest version of it.
I've read the PSS-780 out port is also a thru port so I imagined this to be a problem. I don't think its something I can switch off, or perhaps I've not read the instructions correctly.
To me, it looks like played notes are being passed back to the ST and for some reason the ST is still listening to them, even though Sequencer is on playback and not record. You wouldn't think it would assign any cpu time to it if it wasn't recording. but then I wonder if its sat processing looped notes.

Midi thru on keyboard not connected. Allegedly the out port is ALSO a thru port. Yamaha never disabled this when adding a Thru port to this model up.

Did I read earlier that you are using a cracked version of Cubase on not with the dongle?
Not sure if it makes a difference but now I'm running with a dongle things just seem to feel a bit 'better'
Maybe try a more basic sequencer than Cubase to test connectivity?
Are the MIDI cables new, could you try another cable perhaps?

It very likely is my dodgy copy lol!
Dongles and breakout midiex are no doubt expensive if you can find them! I'd go midiex route rather than the dongle if I get the chance just for the extra ports. Will keep my eyes open maybe I can find one at a good price (lol)
