I downloaded the demo of the first game to give the PS3 a test, make sure the thermals were OK after getting all the dust out and doing a re-paste. Worked very well and I completed the demo, runs a bit cooler than the melty PS3 so I may swap it out, just contemplating at the moment, as I'd also need to swap out the HDD as the melty one has a 1TB drive in it.

I need to get back to playing 'The Last of Us' too, very good game from the same studio.

I preferred to play Uncharted:The Nathan Drake collection on PS4 (@rubber_jonnie has a PS4). The games are identical in content but you get better graphics (higher polygon models and higher resolution textures), better framerate, faster loading.

There are some good PS3 exclusive titles not on PS4 that are must play on PS3 but Uncharted isn't one of them
  • God of War Ascension
  • God of War Collection
  • God of War Origins Collection
  • inFamous
  • inFamous 2
  • inFAMOUS Festival of Blood
  • Killzone 2 & 3
  • Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection
  • Motorstorm Pacific Rift
  • Motorstorm Apocalypse
  • Ratchet & Clank Trilogy HD
  • Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time
  • Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction
  • Resistance
  • Resistance 2
  • Resistance 3
  • Sly Trilogy HD
  • Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
  • Tales of Xillia
  • Tales of Xillia 2

Got that one too.

I haven't finished it yet...

Another good one is PsychoBreak, called The Evil Within outside Japan.

Will have to look that one up, thanks.

Whilst I have a PS4, it's not repaired yet, but I need to get back to it. It is 'working' in that it boots to a white light (WLOD), but sadly no display, despite replacing the HDMI encoder.

I will get back to it now I have HDMI breakout boards and an HDMI tester, it's probably something simple as the TV does pick up a signal, but just needs work. The PSU did fail and I think it took out some components when it did, so I just need to work out what.

I have a 2nd PS4 I'm using for parts and for 'training' on my re-balling machine. Not sure if it'll ever work again as it had a BLOD, but it's definitely been useful for tinkering with. Will reball the APU soon and reinstall, even if it only gets back to a BLOD I'll be happy, and it has already provided some parts for the WLOD machine.

Thanks for the game recommendations as always.

Well, the melty PS3 has now been replaced by the non melty one, but swapping the drives over was a bit of a palaver!

Well, not physically, but from a backing up the data and then restoring side of things, but at least I know what I'm doing now.

The new one does appear to have much improved thermals, but I'll keep the old melty one as a backup, you just never know what might go wrong.

Time to turn my attention back to the PS4, which has no video output.

Or just get another PS4 and put the one you have in the spares box? They are dirt cheap. Gone are the times where PS4 owners thought they would part fund their PS5 purchase by selling their PS4. Add in the PS5 price reduction and boom.

£50 on FB Marketplace for unboxed slims with 1 controller.

We're in that sweet spot just before they become collectable.

I have to be honest, the thought has crossed my mind. I'd like to get the other one working though, but it would really help if I had a working one I could cross check with.

I mean it could still be that I have a bad HDMI encoder, I got it from AliExpress and that doesn't always work out so well...

If I do decide to replace again, I'll get one from a more reputable source. In the meantime my HDMI port tester is showing a couple of things. First, the voltage at the HDMI port is too high, second, I do sometimes get output and I sometimes do get a signal out. I certainly see the TV getting something.

I'll probably make a decision about getting another in the new year, especially if I can find one cheap that just needs a replacement HDMI port as they are simple to do.

Somebody at work did offer me one with a bad HDMI port for free, but he now can't find it...
