MegaST keycaps

Post by alexh »

Hi,

I'm in the process of buying a MegaST2 from Mikro. It is being sold with a european (German?) keyboard.

My question is : Are the keycaps for MegaST keyboard compatible with other Atari ST keyboards? Could I replace the keycaps with those from a UK ST keyboard? Are they physically and visually (colour) the same?

The reason I ask is the MegaST keyboard apparently has different switches to other STs and sometimes that means different keycaps.

I think I may have found my answer

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132832006475

(It's a eBay advert selling MegaST keycaps and the description says "CAUTION! NOT COMPATIBLE WITH ATARI 520ST/1040 ST(E) systems!!!!!"

Can anyone else confirm this?

I got a european keyboard from a guy on FB, details here: A Wounded Keyboard has arrived and like you, I have a UK keyboard spare, but the keycaps do not fit from a standard ST.

Since mine was a qwertz layout, I was able to swap the z and y and it looks and works fine, but there are other keys that are differently marked to the functions on my English machine that I can't currently swap.

Some sort of adapter may be possible though, just haven't had time to investigate.

Yup. Keycap on MegaST is cherry black. The cap from normal keyboard is to big so it will wobble on the stem. The pic below show the normal to the left an MegaST cherry to the right.
