PhilC wrote: Tue Nov 26, 2024 1:24 pm @rubber_jonnie you should get two rooms if you ordered the assembled one. I've used both without issues on my Cumana.

Sounds like something not right with one drive if it just spins. Mind you, if you have a disk in drive two, then the drive motor runs in drive one at the same time, regardless of a disk being in it or not.
I presume you meant 2 ROMs?
I read it as 2 rooms as the amount of projects you have @rubber_jonnie you probably need 2.

Yoi should be able to find the DNFS 1.2 ROM image online. You definitely need a ROM as the Beeb has no idea how to control the floppy interface without it. :-)
Intro retro computers since before they were retro...
ZX81->Spectrum->Memotech MTX->Sinclair QL->520STM->BBC Micro->TT030->PCs & Sun Workstations.
Added code to the MiNT kernel (still there the last time I checked) + put together MiNTOS.
Collection now with added Macs, Amigas, Suns and Acorns.

ROM is coming with the 1770 adapter :)

@PhilC @JezC @stephen_usher

Well I have been a bit of a noob here...

So you're all right, the key missing component was the DFS ROM. Honestly I don't know why it wasn't with the Beeb the drives came with, though I'm fairly sure one of my other Beebs does have an 8271, however it doesn't have a ROM either.

That said there is a need for the Cumana disk since it has formatting tools, FORM40 & FORM80 plus a VERIFY tool.

I have also managed to image some disks using the Greaseweazel now after doing a bit of figuring out. Are they good images? Well only time will tell as I have been able to write an image to disk, but what I need to do next is see if it works, which I'll do when the 1770 interface and ROM arrives.

That at least I hope proves the drive is OK and I was just being a muppet...

@rubber_jonnie the two DFS Roms that come with the 1770 interface that I got have a format and verify command built in but for older DFS uses, I put the disc doctor rom into my Beebs..
If it ain't broke, test it to Destruction.

You'll probably need the Watford 1770 DFS ROM for the new interface. I'm not sure if that contains the Tube code that the DNFS ROM has, but you probably won't miss it unless you have a second processor.

The kit I've ordered comes with the necessary ROMs :)

It's an ATPL Sidewise ROM/RAM board and it's heading for my number 2 BBC. It's got no ROMs installed at present, but it does have RAM. I'm sure I'll be able to find plenty of ROMs though.

I'm also looking at this machine for a proper FDD interface. IIRC it has an intel 8271 and it requires a disk to boot from for the dual Cumana drive I have, and I don't have the disk. I could make one with Greaseweazel but I'd rather get a 1770 based controller which replaced the 8271 fairly quickly, and it's also ROM based.

I guess that needs to go on the project list...

I've just been looking at a January 1985 edition of Acorn User and Computer Concepts were selling this board (as their own) for £47.50. I hope that you paid less. :-)
