Hello, back on AtariSTE (And my IP is banned)
Hello, I had Atari 520 ST back in the day, but recently got an Atari 1040 STe. Mostly intend to use it for games, maybe some BBS-ing, or just tinkering. Might do some low level programming, we'll see. Right now just checking to make sure it works, I have a sidecartridge coming in the mail from Spain.
Hadn't intended on introducing myself, but I think my IP is banned. 50.79.209.148 is my house in Berkeley. (I do know these forum sites get hammered by spammers trying to post links, so I get it.)

Welcome to the forum!
Re: Hello, back on AtariSTE (And my IP is banned)
Thanks for mentioning, I have had a look into it and I will unban the IP shortly. It looks like you changed browser multiple times which lead to the ban.cathrynmataga wrote: Mon May 05, 2025 2:25 am Hadn't intended on introducing myself, but I think my IP is banned. 50.79.209.148 is my house in Berkeley. Thanks, I have Mac and two PCs at my house all on this one IP address. That sounds like what did it. I'll try the URL if I get banned again.

Re: Hello, back on AtariSTE (And my IP is banned)
And just for an update, my return to Atari ST(E) is going pretty well. I picked up an Atari STE that came with mouse and monochrome monitor from a pawn shop. It's a little skuffed up, but surpisingly I can't find anything wrong with it. The up arrow key was sticky, but I just poked at it a few times and now it works. I don't think this computer was over opened up even as the sticker was intact.
I got the SideCartrige and ACSI2sTM and so far I've been writing to hard disks okay. Maybe I dodged the 'bad dma' bullet? We'll see. Oddly the ACSI2STM doesn't ever show the second or hard drive, but C: is working. The ppera Time Bandits hard drive version works (THough I don't rember if there's a way to save game in this.)
I'm on TOS 1.06 which is old, so maybe I'll get a TOS switcher some point. I do have sockets for ROM chips.
It is a little random, but I think in-line with Atari ST random I remember from back in the day. Old days I had 520ST, so curious about some of the STE specific demos and things. There must be a mod file player for STE, I presume? Maybe will track down some of this.

For demos, I'd say browse the output of, say, Silly Venture: https://demozoo.org/parties/4779/
Not sure how easy it is to filter the demos that truly need STE hardware vs ST, but demozoo covers a lot of the scene.
Last year there was also this arcade-style racing game, Faster: https://retroracing.itch.io/faster-atari-ste

Pouët allows you to filter productions by machine type and has a seperate option for the STe

Re: Hello, back on AtariSTE (And my IP is banned)
That driving game looks pretty good. Why the STE is interesting, as it seems to have untapped potential. Stock ST seems to be fully utilized by European commercial games. Back in the day, ST boxed gaming was already dead here in the USA when I had one.
Though right now, I find myself trying to get my command environment setup. I really tried with gulam, I tried latest with recent patches, but it is random in a way I don't understand, crashing, printing strange error messages -- maybe SideCartrige, maybe acsi2stm? I tried with ACSI hard disk rather then GemDrive hard disk. It seems fine from floppy.
Emucon2 for me is pretty rock solid, so even though that's way more primitive, I think that'll be it for now. Only irritation, really, is that it start with path set to A:\, so I have to type "path c:\bin" every time I start it. Documentation is vague on this.
stevie.ttp for a text editor is working well for me. Years of programming and tinkering in Linux has optimized my vi-skills, and so far this is working well. Mostly I'm just monkeying with desktop.inf. Also 1st_word works without trouble. See if I can find the ST atariwriter version, though I don't think I'm going to be writing any long text on Atari.
I've been doing quite a bit of copying files and directories from hard drives, apps and games. Real floppy to hard disk, Hard disk to hard disk is fine, and Side cardtridge hard disk to acsi hard drive is fine. I did see crashes copying from SideCartridge floppy emulation to hard disk, but I guess that's sidecartridge random, and I do not have the bad DMA issues, so I'm saved having to go down the rabbit hole trying to fix this, looks like.
Still trying to get my system of getting files from PCs to Atari all setup. I'm copying files and swapping SD cards, but I think I should be able to do better with sidecartridge. I'm spoiled by Fujinet on Atari 8bit, where I have TNFS setup. Maybe I'll setup a local web server for floppies. This is what I really need sorted out before I can start browsing the demo scene more luxuriously.

Which version of Gulam are you using? Just interested as I have a fork of Gulam on Github - wondered if this is the version you're using.

Re: Hello, back on AtariSTE (And my IP is banned)
I tried exactly that, the 0.2.0 version, and I also went back to the 'Atari modified version' -- what's weird is when I copy the whole thing to a directory in C:\ and run it, I just get random errors, eventually, after copying a few files and things. It's just random, sometimes it doesn't start, sometimes it does. Sometimes I see errors using cp. Sometimes it works enough to make me think I've solved it, but then it goes bad again eventually. I think maybe if I run it completely from physical floppy, it works, but not sure.
