KANDINSKY MUSIC PAINTER (KMP) is a graphics-oriented music program
that works with all common MIDI keyboards and expanders. With the
help of KMP you can create graphic scores and convert them into
sounds. Of course, the scores can also be printed. The musical
graphics are created in the upper window of the main page using
various graphic functions as they are known from graphics programs.
In the lower window of the main page the dynamic course of a page can
be determined by a velocity curve, the course of which can be changed
as required by setting interpolation points (->Set Velocity).
By manipulating various parameters that control Tempo, Sound,
Sustain, etc., you can musically link to different areas of New Music
(Electronic Music, Aleatoric, Minimal Art), as well as any rhythm
patterns or "Mood Music", e.g. as background music for film sequences.

Please note the following Specifications:

- The number of working pages is limited to one page.
- A Maximum of 16 tones can be set per time unit.
- When drawing, the N: and X: icons in the Upper Controller Bar
show the Notes (C-2 - G8) and the X Coordinate.
- When setting interpolation points for the velocity curve, the
coordinates are displayed in the X: and Y: icons under the velocity
  curve.
- With some graphic functions "Elastic Bands" have to be pulled out.
To do this, a corner is determined by a left-click, then a box is
pulled out by moving the mouse and its size is fixed with a left-
  click.
- All functions are called up with a left-click and ended with a
right-click or - if they have not yet been completed - cancelled.
In this version only the function ->TONALITY offers further
options after calling it up with a left-click.
- There are several input buttons available. These are labelled S: ->
  Side, ->Tempo, R: ->Repeat, S: ->Sound, V: ->Volume.
These are called up with a left-click.
The mouse pointer then disappears and the numerical values can be
edited by moving the mouse or using the cursor keys.
If the value ranges are exceeded or fall below, a bell sounds and
the counting starts again at the bottom / top. Left-click (or
Insert) confirms the new value, right-click (or ClrHome) cancels
the entry and restores the old value.
- The sound result depends to a large extent on the sounds set on the
keyboard (expander). So if it doesn't sound as expected, try
experimenting with different sounds (a sound editor is sometimes
very helpful) or different devices, because the speed with which MIDI
data is processed by keyboards and expanders is often very different.
KMP also has particularly powerful functions for changing the sound
  (->Sustain, ->Legato, ->Hold Voices).
- Global Specifications (referring to all pages) are: ->Tempo,
  ->Repeat, ->Sound, ->Volume, ->Mouse, ->Tonality, ->Sustain,
  ->Legato and ->Hold Voices.

Menus:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
LOAD FILE - Load a KANDINSKY MUSIC PAINTER file with the
extension KMP. Saved parameters are used after
                    loading.

SOUND OFF - The graphic functions run faster with this option.

LOAD
PRESETS - Loads saved controller values from the KMP.DAT
file. If this is missing, the corresponding
parameters (->SAVE PRESETS) are assigned by KMP.
This also applies to the start of the program.

SAVE
PRESETS - Saves controller values in the KMP.DAT file.

                    Saved parameters in this version:

                    - MIDI System Channel
                    - Tempo
                    - Repeat
                    - Sound
                    - Volume
                    - Mouse Shape
                    - Sustain
                    - Legato
                    - Keyboard Voices
                    - Hold Voices

Main page - Upper Controller Bar (CB-1):
----------------------------------------------------------------------
MIDI SYSTEM CHANNEL
Use the K: icon to set the MIDI transmission channel. This must match
the receiving channel on the keyboard. Range of values 1-16.

SOUND
In the middle icon S: you can set the sound. For practical reasons,
only the sound number sent to the keyboard (expander) is displayed.
This is a global setting. Value range 0 - 127.

VOLUME
The letter V: (Volume) Indicates the overall volume that is set on
the keyboard (expander). This is a global setting.
Value range 0 - 127.

REPEAT
In the R: (Repeat) icon you can select the repetition rate when
entering pitches. With a small value the sound outputs very quickly,
with a large value the sound outputs with a delay.
Range of values 0 - 10.

MOUSE
When you click the mouse icon, various mouse pointers are made
available to you for input: point, normal crosshair, hollow crosshair.

TONALITY
The last button on the CB-1 has the preset designation CHROMATICS.
This means that all tones defined on the MIDI side (C-2 to G8) are
available for the input and random functions. After clicking the icon,
a dialog box appears in which various scales can be selected.
In version 0.1 there are the following scales:
BLUES, MINOR-PENTATONIC, CHROMATIC and BALINESE. This is a global
setting that masks out any non-scale specific tones for all inputs.
If the function is called with a right-click, the current page is
adapted to the tonality. All tones not belonging to the scale are
shifted up or down to the next valid tone.

Main Page - Lower Controller Bar (CB-2):
----------------------------------------------------------------------
SET VELOCITY
Via VEL. support points can be set with the mouse. The current
coordinates are displayed in the CB-2 at X: and Y:. Clicking on a
support point again deletes it. The Y-Value is also the velocity value
that is sent to the keyboard when the corresponding time unit is played.
The input is confirmed with a right-click and the curve is then drawn.

NORMAL STRAIGHT
Use the icon ]-[ to set a mean velocity (velocity 64).

UNDO VELOCITY
UNDO [] makes the last entry point invalid.

Graphic Functions
----------------------------------------------------------------------
TOGGLE PLAY
The icon with the curved stave switches the play functions around.
You also have the option of switching over "manually" by pressing the
SPACEBAR.

BLOCK COORDINATES
When manipulating blocks, you can read off the coordinates and pitch
limits of the current block in the box above the two boxes.

MARK BLOCK
The box with a dashed border is used to frame, move and delete blocks.
Left-clicking allows you to mark a block with an "elastic band". This
can be shifted opaque after another left-click. You can remove the
block by left-clicking again after marking and holding down the mouse
button a little longer. Then drag the block onto the display field of
the block coordinates on the left edge of the toolbar.

COPY BLOCK
The box with a solid border is used to copy the block, the
coordinates of which are displayed in the field above. After calling
the function, the block becomes visible and can be positioned by
moving the mouse. A left-click copies the block to the current position.
All block functions are subject to sixteen voices.
i.e. that under certain circumstances tones above and below a copied
block can be deleted!

POINTS
This icon is used to set individual tones, similar to free-hand
drawing in graphics programs.

SPRAY CAN
After calling up this function with a left-click, it works in a similar
way to the points function, only points are now created in a larger
area. The size of the work area is fixed in this version.

LINE
After calling up the icon that shows a line, the starting point is set
with a left-click, then the line is drawn out, fixed with a left-click
and then moved.

PARALLEL LINES
After calling up this function, an "elastic band" is pulled out, fixed
with a left-click, secured and finally determined. Lines are now drawn
automatically from left to right within a frame parallel to the upper
edge. With a left-click the function jumps to the next line down.

BEZIER CURVE
After calling up this icon, which shows a curved line, the start and
end points are set with a left-click. You influence the curvature of the
curve by moving the mouse. With another left-click you finally define
the Bezier curve. The curve can be moved and then fixed with a left-click.

SINE CURVE
After calling up the sine icon you determine the start and end point
with the mouse. The X-expansion and the amplitude are then set by
moving the mouse and fixed with a left-click. The sine curve can then be
shifted and finally placed with a left-click.

ELLIPSE
After calling the icon, the center of the ellipse is set with a
left-click. Then the X and Y radius are determined by moving the
mouse. Another left-click defines the size. You can then move the
ellipse and finally confirm with a left-click.

MAGNIFYING GLASS
Click on the magnifying glass icon to enlarge a section of the pitch
window in the velocity window. This can be fixed by left-clicking.
Then it is possible to set or delete individual points with the mouse.

ERASER
Using the icon that shows a dashed box and an eraser, you can delete
freely defined areas. To do this, first pull out the eraser and fix it
in size with a left-click. Then you can erase while holding down the
left mouse button.

DELETE PITCH PAGE
Use the CLR icon to delete the pitch data for the current page.

UNDO PITCHES
You can use the undo icon to undo the last drawing or delete function in
the pitch window. Undo twice restores the state before the first undo.

RANDOM FUNCTIONS
Small quavers are symbols for the random functions. After calling
up a dialog box appears in which you can select 4 drawing functions
(point, line, ellipse, sinusoid). The functions can be activated
individually by clicking on the respective icon. The limit values of
the parameters that influence these functions are preset in version 0.1.
The NEW button means that the current page will be deleted first and
then randomly replenished. The chosen tonality applies. ADDITIVE means
that new points are added to the existing points, whereby the 16
voices apply.

Play Functions
----------------------------------------------------------------------

TOGGLE GRAPHICS
The icon with a pen and compass switches to the graphics functions.
You also have the option of switching over "manually" by pressing the
SPACEBAR.

TEMPO
The playback speed in beats per minute is shown after the word "Tempo".
You can change this value by clicking and moving the mouse.
Value range 4 - 2400, whereby intermediate values are not displayed.

TIMER
In the Sec. icon you can read the time whilst playing.

PEDAL
The PED icon is used to globally switch the keyboard sustain (Hold).

LEGATO
The LEG icon is used to switch on legato playback globally.
This means that a tone is not switched off immediately after it has
been played, but continues until the next time unit.

KEEP VOICE
The icon with a crotchet note and slur and the one next to it
(crotchet note with numerical value) enable access to another type of
articulation variant. KANDINSKY works with graphics. Each line point
represents a tone that is switched on and off again. This effect can
be particularly unpleasant for sounds with a lot of attack. If the
icon (crotchet note with tie) is activated, only the first tone of a
horizontal line segment is switched on and only the last sound is
switched off, with the effect of "staying still". Test this function
once with organ or string sounds!

KEYBOARD VOICES
Some keyboards only have 8 Voices. This means that with 8 and more
part chords, all other tones are switched off (KMP works with 16 voices!).
Continuing horizontal lines sound no longer when the lower icon
is activated. (->KEEP VOICE). KMP is now able to switch on non-running
lines again, if in a time unit there were at least as many voices as were
set on the icon above. You should therefore set an 8 here for an eight-
note keyboard if you want to use the holding notes.

GRAPHICS OUTPUT
You can control the graphics output while playing using 4 functions:

SW - Output of the graphic black on white.
WS - Output of the graphic white on black.

SM - Output of the graphic in normal size.
LG - Output of the graphic in double size.

PLAY
The current page is played using the <> icon.
Playback can be cancelled by right-clicking.
In version 0.1 you can only play from left to right.

IMPORTANT!
If an input button fails to be called up with a left-click,
simply hit any key and proceed as normal.
