Intuitive Midi System 4.7 : Getting Started
============================================================================

1. Starting ...
---------------

- Start the program by double-clicking on "IMS_47.PRG".

- After a while, the IMS space intro appears.
Press any key or mouse to continue.

- When 'Help' is enabled, a small window appears to tell U
that whenever U want help, U can click on the 'Help' button on
top of the screen. More about this later.

- Press any key or click outside this window to continue.

2. Recording / Playback
-----------------------

- The first thing to know is that, when U play your keyboard, IMS directs
  it to the 'Current Instrument'.
This can be set by clicking in the panel window (bottom-left of the screen)
  on the appropriate button.

An instrument is in fact just a name for a combination of a midi-port and
channel. Some other things can be defined per instrument.

So if U select 'Atari 1' you will hear the sound coming from the midi-
instrument(s) connected to the atari-port, and set to channel 1.

U can change the current instrument whenever U want.

- Please start playback by pressing 'Enter' or clicking on the 'Play'-button
  in the panel-window.

  Now U must hear the metronome : a midi-click and a monitor-beep is played
at the beginning of every beat.

If U don't hear the monitor-beep, please turn up the volume of your
  monitor-speaker.

If U don't hear the midi-click, the goto the system-menu, and then
  choose 'Click Setup'.
Then choose the right instrument / key and velocity for the midi-click
  in your midi-setup.

Go back to the previous screen by pressing 'Esc'.

- U can stop playback by pressing '0' or clicking on the 'Play' button again.

- Reset the song-position at 1.1.000 by pressing '0' (again).

- Now, lets go for some recording by pressing '*' or clicking on the
  'Rec'-button in the panel window.

A countdown is played by the midi-click and by a monitor-beep.

  Play something wild ...

Stop recording by stopping the sequencer or by pressing '*' / clicking
  'Rec' again.

IMS asks U now for a name for the recording.

Type in the name and press 'Return' or 'Enter'.

When U don't like the recording just press 'Esc', and try again.

Now U see a black part in the arrange-editor which contains your recording.

Stop / reset the sequencer to 1.1.000 and playback the part : U hear
what U played (quantized at 1/16).

When U directly go for another recording, IMS will ask afterwards wether
the new recording must Merge or Overwrite the current (=black) part.

Merge means mixing the old and the new.
Overwrite means erasing the old and keeping the new.

U can also choose the create a new (separate) part, or to cancel the
  recording.

When U do some recording without having a current part, this means that
no part is selected (black), a new part is automatically created.

So by choosing a part (or no part) before recording, U can say where your
  recording must go.

Any part can contain recordings on different instruments. U can even
change the current instrument while recording !

Please understand that the current instrument is just of importance for
your next recordings, not for what is already recorded !

When U want to change the instrument for a part that is already recorded,
U have to call the main-menu, choose 'Sequences', the choose 'Instrument'.
This is a sequence-function just like transpose, velocity, etc...

3. The Arrange-Editor
---------------------

- By making recordings, U create parts.

These parts can be moved, copied, erased, ...

This is where the Toolbox comes alive : By clicking the right mouse button,
and releasing it, the arrange toolbox appears :

Cross : - (De)Selects parts. Use extra <Shift> for extended selections.

           - Moves parts, or with <Alternate> copies parts

  Pencil : - Lengthen/Shorten existing parts.

           - Draw new parts which will play the same sequence as the current
part, or when no current part, a new sequence !

With <Shift>, the sequence-pool is called, which is explained
             later.

  Gum : Erases parts

  Sissor : Divides parts

  Glue : Mixes parts

  Muter : (Un)Mute parts

Navigator : With this tool, U can position and zoom the edit-window.

4. Some info about the inside
-----------------------------

In fact, IMS has a structure inside, which is interesting to know :

When U record something, this creates a sequence. A sequence is a sequence
of events, with a certain length.

For example, lets take a drum-sequence of 4 bars, called 'Drum-1'.

When this sequence is placed in an arrange, this is done by means of
a 'part'.

So, lets say Drum-1 must play from 1.1.000 to 5.1.000, then a part is
created from 1.1.000 to 5.1.000 with a pointer to the sequence Drum-1.

But we can play it also from 9.1.000 to 17.1.000 by means of a 2nd part,
but we still have 1 sequence.

If we edit Drum-1, U will hear that its changed as well in the 1st as in the
2nd part. This is because its the same sequence !

Since the 2nd part plays 8 bars, Drum-1 will repeat itself 2 times (8/4=2).

So the sequence-length is a bit like a loop-length.

U can change this length at any time in a very musical way ...

There is still one thing to tell about sequences : the pool.

Any recorded sequence comes in the sequence-pool. This is very handy since
U can draw parts in an arrange and choose a sequence out of the pool.

This works like a kind of little library.

So U can create sequences, and use them anywhere, without scrolling or
whatever; just call them when U need them.

The advantages of the pool will become obvious when working with IMS.

5. Editors
----------

When U want to change something of a sequence, U can use an editor.

There are several editors in IMS which all have their own specialities :

- List Editor : A mathematical list of events
- Key Editor : The famous piano-roll editor, used to edit the note-keys.
- Grafix Editor : Edits the velocity for notes, curves for controllers, ...
- Drum Editor : Define a drum-map, and make some drum-patterns.
- ...

U can access these editors easyly by clicking on the editor-button in the
panel window.

By left-clicking, U go to the indicated editor.

By right-clicking, U can choose an editor.

All detailed info about any editor can be requested via the Help-Wizard,
explained below.

6. Main-Menu & Fast-Keys
------------------------

Via the main-menu, U can access all (big) functions of IMS, like

  - Copying arranges
  - Part mute possibilities
  - Transpose a sequence
  - Rename an instrument
  - Go to the Fader-Room
  - Load / Save
  - Syncronisation Setup
  - ...
  - ...
  - ...

This main-menu is at the top of the screen.
Click on it or press <Shift>+Fn (respective function-key).

First choose the main-topic, ex. 'Disk', then choose the sub-item,
ex. 'Save'.

When U would have to access the main-menu all the time, also for frequent
functions, this would be very frustrating.

This is where the Fast-Keys come alive : Fast-Keys are key-combinations
which U can choose yourself to call up main-menu-functions.

When U want to assign a Fast-Key to a function, call up the main-menu, make
your main-choice, and then, in the second menu, U will see appear some
Soft-Buttons (explained below) at the bottom of the screen.

The 1st is 'Assign' which corresponds with function-key F1.

So before making your 2nd choice, but with the menu-cursor on the right item,
press F1 and make any key-combination of <Control>, <Shift> and <Alternate>
with almost any key on the computer-keyboard.

Whenever U make this key-combination, it calls directly the assigned
function.

An example : We want to assign the key-editor to the 'E' key.

Call the main-menu by pressing <Help> or clicking on the 'Menu' button in
the panel window, and choose "Edit". Then go with the cursor (arrows keys,
mouse) to "Key-Editor", then press F1, then press 'E'.
Now the Key-Editor is assigned to the 'E' key.

U can make Fast-Keys where U want, it is fully free, personal and practical !

Please note that U have to save any changes in the Fast-Key setup by
using the "Save" soft-button (F4). When saved as "START_UP.FKY" on your
start-up disk(ette), these Fast-Keys are automatically loaded on start-up.

7. Soft-Buttons
---------------

Some 'little' functions are accessed by Soft-Buttons, which are the black
buttons at the bottom of the screen.

These Soft-Buttons are very screen-dependent and they change depending
on what U are actually doing.

Every Soft-Button corresponds with the relevant function key : SB1 = F1
                                                               SB2 = F2
                                                                  ...
Don't forget these Soft-Buttons because they cover a wide range of very
specific functions.

8. Help-Wizard
--------------

IMS has an integrated Help-Wizard which contains a full manual of the
program, and can be called via the 'Help' button in the panel-window.

A little window appears and tells U that U can press any key or click
the mouse about which U want to get help.

This means that U can - Click on any button of the panel window
                      - Choose any main-menu item
                      - Click in the working area
                      - Choose any tool out of the toolbox
                        (right mouse-button)
                      - Press/click any Soft-Button

about which U want to get more information.

Within the little help-window, U have a button called "Special Topics".

With this button, U can get help on some special topics.
