The LETTER Display Templates were designed so that the files may be
easily converted to a Standard MIDI file and imported into your sequencer.
Most sequencers provide import capability for type 0 or type 1 Standard
MIDI Files (SMF) using the .MID extention.

-------------------------------
Converting Letter Display files
-------------------------------

To convert a GenEdit LETTER Display file to a SMF, run the MEX2MID program
by Martin Tarenskeen that is included with the Editor/Librarian package.
MEX2MID is located in the same directory as the "MEX" and "MID" folders.
I've set it up this way because the program looks for files in the
directory where it is located. If you copy the program to your hard drive,
it is suggested that you set up things up as I have done in the Letter
Display package.

1. The program will ask you to select the .MEX (MIDI-EX) file you want to
convert. The Letter Display files use a .LET extension, but this does
not matter to MEX2MID, it will work just the same.

2. You will be promnpted to set the "Tempo", 120 bpm is the default
setting. A range of 100 and 120 bpm works well for Letter Display
Sets, but any Tempo value will work.

      Press Return

3. Next you will be prompted to set the "Time Interval". For a Tempo of
100 bpm, this should be set to a value of 2800. For a Tempo of 120 bpm,
this should be set to a value of 3500.

      Press Return

4. You can now save the file. MEX2MID will automatically use the same file
name as your original .LET file, or you can give the .MID file a new
   name.

Note: When converting a "Set" of multiple Displays, the Time Interval
setting is very important. The above settings will allow Displays to
be spaced adequately within a single MIDI Track so that each text
message will display on the front panel of your instrument for an
optimum duration of time. For Tempo settings different than 100 or
120, experimentation with the Time Interval will be necessary to
achieve good results when converting Sets of Displays.

------------------------------------
Importing Your Files Into a Sequence
------------------------------------

Some sequencers (such as Hybrid Arts' EditTrack) may require you to save
your Letter Display .MID file in the program's native format, before you
can import the track into an existing sequence.

If your sequencer allows you to import tracks, then you will be able add a
Letter Display track to an existing song file. Once imported, you can move
your text messages within the track as desired. The method for doing this
will depend on which sequencer you are using. Most of the time, the
MEX2MID program settings will work just fine (once you have determined the
correct Time Interval settings for the specific Tempo of your song file.

-------------------------------------
Converting Other GenEdit Files to SMF
-------------------------------------

MEX2MID works with "front panel dumps" and should work with most "bulk
dump" GenEdit files, but some may need to be exported as RAW files first.
The RAW format is the same as what is some times referred to as "pure
data" or a "binary" file, (.syx) and is also the same as the
cross-platform "MIDI-EX" format (.mex).

To export a GenEdit file as Raw Data, drag the Disk Icon to the top bar of
either Window. The File selector will appear. Select the file you wish to
convert to RAW Data. Once loaded to the Window, the file name will be
displayed at the top of the Window.

From the Windows Menu - select "Export RAW Data" (or use the keyboard
equivalent by holding down the "Control" key while pressing the "X" key.
A dialog box will appear, choose the "Binary Option". You will then get
the File Selector once more. Browse to the directory where you would like
to save the converted file. You can name the file with any 3 letter
extention other than .RAW if you like. When converting the file to a SMF,
it will not matter to the MEX2MID.PRG.
