==========================================================================

The commercial GenEdit v2.0 release did not come with any instrument
configuations or templates except that found on the EXAMPLES disk. Editors
for specific instruments had to be purchased separately. The GenEdit v2.02
freeware release comes with a large library of instrument support. This
sample studio is intended to demonstrate the power of GenEdit to those who
may not be familiar with the program.

To use a complex studio setup like "Cool Studio", GenEdit must be
installed on a hard drive due to the number of files and space needed to
create a studio setup. "Cool Studio" is (almost) plug 'n play but you will
need to do a couple of things first to make it work.

   1. Create a folder on your hard drive named GENEDIT.

   2. Copy ALL the files and folders from the "PROGRAM" disk to the
GENEDIT folder you have just created on your hard drive.

   3. Now copy ALL of the folders and files from the "COOL_STU" disk into
      your GENEDIT folder.

   4. Next copy the files from the "DATA 2" folder (on the "EXAMPLES"
Disk) to the DATA folder inside the GENEDIT folder now on your hard
      drive.

   5. Last, you will need to set the "File Paths' in GenEdit. (see below)

---------------------------------
Setting the file paths in GenEdit
---------------------------------

The first time you start GenEdit you will need to set the file paths so
the program will load all necessary files correctly the next time you
boot the program.

GenEdit needs to find the AUTOLOAD.STU file and the AUTOLOAD.CFG when it
starts up and must know where to look for templates when you load a bank
of patches into a window to edit them and where to retrieve and save data
files to and from the two windows, or from MIDI to disk and disk to
MIDI.

To set the paths, do the following:

From the "FILE MENU"
    - select the "Set Paths" option
    - click on "Configurations" in the left column, you will see the file
selector appear. Browse using the mouse until you get to the CONFIGS
      folder and select OK
    - repeat this process for all the remaining file selections listed in
      the left column.
    - click OK to close the Set Paths dialog box

         then:

From the "FILE MENU"
    - select the "User Preferences" option
    - click on SAVE and then EXIT

GenEdit should now find all the files correctly each time you start the
program.

------------------
Using Cool Studio
------------------

You do not need to own any of the MIDI instruments or gear supported by
Cool Studio to try it out. In fact you do not even have to have any
instruments hookup to your Atari to send the MIDI files in Cool Studio or
to edit the patches that come with the Editors in Cool Studio.

Sending Files Over MIDI
-----------------------

To send data files to any of the supported instruments, simply drag the
"Disk Icon" in the center of GenEdit's main screen and drop it on an
instrument or "Device Slot" in the center column window. The File Selector
will appear displaying all files with the file extension for that device.
Select a file and GenEdit will begin transmiting it over MIDI. When GenEdit
is finished, you will hear the gong.

Note: Since each configuration has its own file extension, whenever the
Disk Icon is dragged to a particular device listed in the Center Window,
only files for that device will be viewed.

If you own one of these devices and wish to dump data "FROM" the
instrument to GenEdit, be sure to temporarily set your instrument to the
device number used in Cool Studio (see below) You can edit the
configuration later to match the device number of your instrument.

To execute a data dump "TO" GenEdit, drag the "Device Slot" for your
instrument to the "Disk Icon". When the Disk Icon highlights, release the
mouse. The data will be received by GenEdit. In the case of devices that
only support front panel dumps, see notes below. Once the data has been
received you will see the File Selector and need to name your file before
saving to disk.

Editing a Bank of Patches
-------------------------

Cool Studio comes with a bank of patches and editors for six devices.
     DX7
     XD5
     MSB+
     Proteus FX
     Ensoniq QS-80
     Ensoniq ESQ-M

To load a bank of patches into the Left Window, drag the "Disk Icon" to the
small box at the top of the window. The file selector will appear. If you
have not set the Paths correctly, then you will have to open the DATA
folder to choose a file. They are named so they can be identified for each
device. Select the bank of patches you wish to edit and click OK. The bank
will be loaded into the Left Window and the Patch names will be displayed.

To edit a Patch, "Right-Click" on the Patch name and the Editor will
open. If you have not set your paths correctly, you will get the file
selector. In that case, browse to the "TEMPLATS" folder and select the
Template for your instrument. Click OK and the Editor will open. Please
refer to the "TUTORIAL" located on the EXAMPLES Disk for details on using
the Editors and saving your edited Patches back to disk.

It is a good idea to "Clear" a Window (though not necessary) before
loading another bank of sounds to the same window. If you do not clear
the window first, GenEdit will only show files with the extension of
the previous file when you go to load the next file.

Note: If you have a large studio setup with a lot of patch banks or
libraries, you might want to separate your patch banks from the rest of
your data files by creating a folder named "EDITOR", inside the DATA
folder, and put all your banks of patches in the editor folder.

-----------------------------------
The Power of a GenEdit Studio Setup
-----------------------------------

GenEdit can save and send patch banks, manage libraries of patches, handle
bulk dumps for 60 devices in a single Studio Setup, and even reconfigure
an entire of studio by sending a single Multi-block file over MIDI to all
your studio gear at once. (The possiblities are limited only by the MIDI
implementation of your gear).

"Cool Studio" includes support for the following gear ** (see note below)

                Multi-Fx dump
                Multi-EQ dump

Custom accompaniment - front panel dump
Multi pad - front panel dump
Song memory - front panel dump
                Registration - front panel dump

Note: ** When using the dump utilities listed above as "front panel dump",
drag the "Device Slot" from the center window to the "Disk Icon" and then
implement a bulk dump from the instrument. When the data has been received
by GenEdit, a dialog will appear asking what you would like to do next.
Named the file and save it to disk. (these configurations do not have
dump request strings written in them, therefore a front panel data dump is
required).

You can also drag the Device to the top of either Window. When you get the
dialog box asking what you want to do, you can then name it. If you
Right-Click on the file while it is displayed in the top of the Window,
you will be able to view information about the file and rename it. To save
to disk, simply drag the file to the Disk Icon. You can send the data back
to your instrument by simply dragging the file from the top of the Window
to the "MIDI Icon".

The instruments for this studio have been set to different device numbers
to prevent any conflicts when sending and receiving data. The
Configuration files for each can be modified to work with these same
instruments set to a different device number. If you own one or more of
these instruments, you will need to temporarily set them to the device
numbers shown above in order for them to work correctly in Cool Studio.

The configurations for the dump utilities above, contain "comment" lines
that provide information on how to edit lines of the CNX code. The
configurations can easily be edited to work with instruments set to a
different device than that shown above.

Please refer to the Addendum of the GenEdit "TUTORIAL" found on the
"EXAMPLES" disk for further information on how to edit Configurations.
The Tutorial is approximately 80 pages in length when printed on US
standard - 8 1/2" x 11" paper. It is advised to load this file into a into
a text editor or word processor to format the pages to your own needs.

----------------------------------
Using the SysXpress Desk Accessory
----------------------------------

GenEdit comes with this desk accessory so you can send your GenEdit,
MIDI-EX or other MIDI data files to your instruments and MIDI devices at
any time without having to start GenEdit. Sysxpress is compatible with
most other MIDI programs including sequencers. Refer to the SysXpress text
file on the "PROGRAM" disk for more information.
