CHAPTER FOUR:

4.1 THE EDIT MENU
------------------

Here is a range of simple, flexible editing functions. By combining them
you can do more complex things. Some have automatic defaults to reduce
the amount of typing required and help you avoid mistakes. If you do
make a mistake, just use UNDO.

* COPY BARS:
lets you copy from anywhere to anywhere by bar.

-From sequence:
This is the source sequence that bars are copied from. The default is the
current sequence.

-First bar:
This is the first bar that you want from the source sequence. The default is
bar 1.

-Last bar:
This is the last bar in the source sequence that you wish to copy. The default
is the last bar of the source sequence.

-To sequence:
This is where the result of the operation will be placed. The default is the
current sequence.

-Before bar:
This is only used by 'Insert'. It specifies the bar before which all the new
ones will be placed. The default is bar 1 which would put the new ones at
the beginning of the destination sequence.

-Number of bars:
This is the number of new bars to be generated by the operation. If this
exceeds the difference between 'First bar' and 'Last bar' the same bars will
be used again.

-Insert / Append / Replace :

Insert can put the new bars at the beginning or in the middle of the
destination sequence.

Append tacks the new bars onto the end of the
destination sequence.

Replace will delete all the original bars of the
destination sequence and replace them with the new ones.
Replace also copies the track and patch information to the destination sequence.

Copy bars is a very comprehensive function. The automatic defaults are
reset if you click in a particular field. For example, if you changed 'From
sequence' so it was one with a different length then clicking on 'Last bar'
will set this field accordingly. When the dialog box first appears the
defaults are such that clicking on COPY or pressing Return will double the
length of the current sequence by appending a copy to itself.

* ERASE BARS
allows you to set the range of bars and tracks to erase.
The default is all the bars of the currently selected track. Edit the defaults
if required then click ERASE to make it happen. Every type of MIDI event will
be erased. If you need to erase more selectively use 'Extract Events'.

* DELETE BARS
will remove bars from a sequence.
An attempt to delete all the bars in a sequence will direct you to create a
new sequence. This is the same as selecting 'New Sequence' from the
options menu. Edit the First bar and Last bar then click on DELETE to make
it happen.

* BOUNCE TRACK
allows copying from one track and/or sequence to another.
If the sequences are of different lengths the result will be the same length
as the longer one. The source track will be unaffected.
If you click on OVERWRITE
the destination track will be replaced by the source.
If you click on MERGE
the source track will be mixed with the destination track.
Mixing MIDI data in this way may produce unexpected results if, for
example, there was pitch bend data present on both tracks.

Bounce Track Shortcut
You can gain fast access to the 'Bounce Track' function. While on the main
screen hold down the Alternate key on the ST's keyboard and, keeping the
key pressed, click and drag the track selector from the source to the
destination track. This will present the Bounce Track dialog with the track
numbers filled in for you.

* EXTRACT EVENTS
can remove specific events from a track and place them on
another or discard (erase) them.

You may specify a range of pitch, velocity and duration when extracting
notes. This is of particular use to MIDI guitar players who need to discard
very short or low velocity notes which these instruments generate as
handling noise.

To the right of the note filter is a set of MIDI event filters. You can switch
these on or off by clicking on them. When ticked, the corresponding events
will be extracted.
The last but one filter has a pair of arrows associated with it. These are used
to select a single MIDI controller. For instance, you may wish to extract just
the modulation wheel. Use the arrows to find 'Modulation Wheel' and tick
the box alongside. If you wish to extract every controller except the
modulation wheel then untick the box alongside 'Modulation Wheel' and
tick the box below which corresponds to 'All Other Controllers'.
When you have set the filters as required click EXTRACT to move the MIDI
events to the destination track or ERASE to remove the events completely.

-Extract Events Shortcut
You can gain fast access to the 'Extract Events' function. While on the main
screen hold down a shift key on the ST's keyboard and, keeping the shift
key pressed, click and drag the track selector from the track you wish to
extract to the destination track. This will present the Extract Events dialog
with the track numbers filled in for you.

-Entering Pitches Easily
Where it is necessary to enter pitch it may be entered as MIDI note number
or name. Alternately you can play a note on your master keyboard then
click in the appropriate field. The note you played will be copied in for
you.

* ROTATE SEQUENCE
will move a sequence forwards or backwards in time.
When recording a loop it is easy to end up a beat or two out against the
metronome click, or you may just decide that the down-beat should occur
in a different place. Select the time interval to move by, holding down a
shift key if you want to select a combination of times. The total time is
shown in 'ticks' and milliseconds. This can be of great help in calculating
the settings required for an echo unit.
You may not rotate more than the length of a bar, use copy/delete if you
need to do that. Click SOONER or LATER to rotate the sequence.

* WORK LOOP
selects one or more bars of a sequence and copies this to
another for recording or editing.

The default source sequence is the current one. The default destination
sequence is 99. You may alter these if you wish.

After clicking MAKE the sequence will change to the work loop. The
sequence in the loop will be named as 'LoopOf' whatever sequence it
came from.

When you have finished editing or recording select work loop again. This
time a different dialog box appears. To put the modified part in the original
sequence click on INSERT or, to return to the original sequence with no
changes, click on DISCARD.

* MAKE SONG
allows you to edit a list of steps numbered 1 to 99.
Each step specifies a sequence number and the number of bars to be used
from that sequence. Ten steps are displayed in the song list, the current step
being highlighted. To change the current step click on the entry you want.
To change the viewing window click on the up or down arrows.

The sequence number and number of bars can be edited for each step.
Once a sequence number has been entered, clicking on 'Number of bars'
will fill in the length of that sequence as a default. Change this if required.
The sequence name will be filled in automatically.

-Insert
makes room for a new step at the current position and moves the
subsequent steps down one.

-Delete
will remove the current step and move subsequent steps up the list
to fill the gap.

-Print
will output a copy of the Song List to a printer if you have one
attached to the computer. If you use a serial printer connected to the
modem port this should be installed from the desktop according to the
procedure in the ST owners manual. Using Save Desktop remembers the
printer installation.

-Preview
allows you to try the song without copying it to another sequence.
The song will start playing from the current step, counting off the bars and
displaying the step and sequence numbers as they change. Click on
Preview again to stop this.

-Copying the Song to a Sequence
The complete and tested song may be copied to a sequence. The original
sequences and the song list will remain unchanged. The newly created
sequence can be treated the same as any other. You may record over it or
edit it in any way. The song list is saved together with the sequences during
'Save All' on the file menu.

-Song List Remix
When generating a sequence, 'Make Song' observes the solo, mute, and
fader settings. The resulting sequence will have the mixer reset; mutes and
solos off, the faders at 100%. It will sound just like the preview, but with the
mixer ready for any overall adjustment of the song.

-Song List Tempo Changes
A tick box allows tempo changes to be inserted in the new sequence. Click
in the tick box to toggle this on or off. You will see ditto marks in the tempo
column of the song list when tempo changes are disabled, confirming that
the tempo is derived from the first sequence in the list. Do not enable tempo
changes unless you specifically require them to be inserted.

4.8 THE GRAPHIC EDITOR
-----------------------

SCREEN EDIT
gives a graphic representation of the notes on the current track.
This is in the form of a grid with pitch on the vertical axis and time on the
horizontal axis. Notes are represented as shaded oblongs. The darker the
note the higher its velocity. The longer the oblong the greater the duration
of the note. The GEM window controls allow selection of which bar(s) and
what range of pitch to display. Editing is accomplished using the mouse.

- The Screen Edit Control Box
At the bottom of the window a track selector allows track changes without
leaving screen edit. Click to change track, holding the mouse button
down if you wish to see the track name. The display width can be set from
1 to 4 bars. A small box with 'VEL:064' is the default velocity display. This is
used to set the velocity of notes made with the right mouse button. The
adjacent arrows are used to change the value.

- SND is used to switch the sounding of notes on or off. When switched on
each newly created or moved note will sound briefly.

- KBD is used to enable entering notes from your MIDI keyboard. The pitch
and velocity are determined by the MIDI keyboard and the position in
time by the horizontal position of the mouse. Remember, notes always
snap to the nearest quantise point so set this accordingly.

- DISPLAY changes the style of background grid.

- SOLO and MUTE buttons function the same as on the main sequencer
page, but due to lack of screen space are only shown for the currently
selected track. Lastly, on the right is the PLAY button. Click here to start or
stop the sequencer. When playing, the section appearing on the screen is
automatically looped.

- the edit display
The vertical window position is remembered for each track. This is a great
help when switching between tracks where you need different window
positions. If there are notes above or below the window area,
corresponding up or down arrows will appear in the title bar of the
window.

The cursor position indicator appears in the top right hand corner. The
first numbers are the time position in beats and ticks. This is followed by the
pitch in MIDI note number and name format. If a drum (transpose exempt)
track is currently selected the appropriate name is taken from the drum list
(see 'Goodies' menu) to replace the pitch indicator.

The cursor position can be nudged using the left or right arrow keys. The
on-screen cursor will move in steps corresponding to the current
quantisation interval. This is of particular benefit when inputting notes
from the MIDI keyboard.

The keyboard graphic is displayed down the left hand side of the screen.
A small square indicates which note the mouse cursor is aligned with. The
mouse cursor is a fine cross-hair when inside the editing area.

- The left-hand mouse button
Clicking on the left half of a note shows the flat hand cursor.
Keeping the mouse button depressed allows the note to be dragged
anywhere on the screen.
When released the note will jump to the nearest
quantisation interval (as set on the quantise menu).

Clicking on the right half of a note shows the pointed hand cursor.
Keeping the button depressed allows the duration of the note to be changed.
Holding the shift key while moving a note will make a copy of the original
note with the same length, velocity and MIDI channel.
Double click on a note to edit it. The MIDI channel, pitch, velocity and note
duration are displayed for editing.

- The right-hand mouse button
To delete a note, click on it with the right mouse button.
To make a new note just click where you want the new note to be. Notes created in this
way are copies of the last note you edited using the left button. The
velocity of the new note will be that shown in the 'VEL:nnn' display.

Many menu items will be disabled during screen edit or when a desk
accessory is open. They are not available until the window is closed.

Leave screen edit by clicking in the top left hand square (closer) or press Return.
