Sound suddenly has died

Post by yerzmyey »

Hi guyz,

1) the sound in my Falcon has suddenly died.
There is _some_ sound but it's veeeeeeeeeeeeery silent.
Almost nothing.

I've been told it's a matter of dead capacitors. On the track of sound.

Is that true that it's enough to change them and everything will be OK?

2) Are they accessible nowadays?

3) Ah, one more thing. There are also 2 amplifiers on the track of sound (two - for both stereo channels). Are they possible to buy contemporary too?

As You know, except of MIDI stuff, I also use often Falcon 030 as an instrument, so it's very important to me.

Greetz,
Y

The amps are pretty standard chips and as far as I'm aware are still available. The same thing has happened to my Falcon but with everything that has happened recently (And a wedding in 10 days...Gulp), fixing it has been on the back burner.

Simbo on the Atari Forum would be the best bet for finding out what the parts are and the most likely suspects for failure on the hardware, though there is another possibility...

If the wrong line has been inserted into the jack, it can send the amplification section a bit haywire, there is an accessory that can reset this and may fix the problem before taking things to bits. Unfortunately I can't find it here, so I'll get it off my Falcon and upload it.

In the meantime ResetNVR may also help and can be found at http://www.atarimusic.net/warez/system- ... d-bootc123.

Ok, fired up the falcon and pulled the accessory. The link is http://www.atarimusic.net/Atari-Music-N ... lconSX.zip.

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot, I do appreciate the help. I saved it and will use it soon.
Meanwhile I also consider to test an opportunity that if the analogue output is dead, then maybe the digital one could still work. Who knows.
I ordered some pieces of hardware and will make further tests.

If you can hear faint sound then the audio section itself is ok and working. Which means a digital out should still work fine :-)

Hmm... Just a thought but have you checked that the cable is ok? While the is still a chance of a hardware fault, it is also possible that the cable is faulty.

Having said that though, if you can use the FDI digital out, that will always give a better sound quality than the falcons analogue audio output
