toHost (USB) <=> MIDI (DIN) heeeeeeeelp

Post by yerzmyey »

Yo.

Anybody knows the "E" series of Yamaha PSR?

I found the "Diving" single on AMN Live
http://www.atarimusic.net/index.php/com ... ing-single
and author writes there he uses Atari Falcon030 with Yamaha PSR-E323 [which has only toHost (USB) MIDI version - as far as I know].

In Yamaha shop I've been told NO additional cables will make possible to connect "E" Yamaha series to real MIDI (like ST/STe/F030).
And now I'm not so sure that it's impossible.

Maybe some of You knows anything about it?
There is a yamaha cable UX-16
http://allegro.pl/usb-midi-interfejs-ya ... 04960.html
You think it will work with ST/F030?

Another thing: the Yamaha's cable is expensive like h.e.l.l.
Will work with Atari any simple cables (but supposedly the same), like this one? http://allegro.pl/kabel-konwerter-usb-m ... 15565.html

Anybody has any experience with the subject-matter?

Thx,
Yerz

According to Yamaha's own specifications, there is MIDI in/out on the device, though Atarisince1989 would be able to confirm

I'm Diving's author (datavase is my artistic name). Hope you liked the song :D

The PSR-E323 has MIDI IN and MIDI OUT (shame they haven't included MIDI THRU) and is connected to my Atari Falcon030 directly through MIDI cables.

There are some PSR-E that have host (USB) and no MIDI. Check it before buying. That was the main reason I bought the E323 and not the E423, which only have USB TO HOST connection. Was the E423 the one you looked at the shop?

In the E323 manual they tell you "Make sure to purchase a Yamaha UX16 or a quality USB-MIDI interface", but that is for when connecting to a PC or Mac through USB. I guess they are assuming that PC and Mac are not real MIDI machines (a big difference with Atari ).

Does it helps?

Yeah, I even left a message there. :)

Argh. So the problem doesn't affect You (well, good for You, after all :) ).

I know about the 423 but I bought it anyway (last year) because it has filters and that's what matters to me.
However today I got a new hope that _maybe_ the additional interface would do the job.

Hm. So I _could_ have some hope about the UX16 cable... I see.
Thx a lot then!

I'm not 100% sure about it. In the E323's manual the UX16 is described to connect from the E323's MIDI to the computer's USB. In your case would be the opposite, right? I mean from the E423's USB to the Atari's MIDI IN/OUT.

In theory it should work, but theories has been proved wrong so many times when interfaces and converters are used. The problem is that IIRC the UX16 is about £50! I never understood why this MIDI devices are so expensive. I wanted to buy a M-Audio Midisport 4x4, but it is £140

BTW, thanks for the comment.

Hmm, the Yamaha UX16 depends on the keyboard having MIDI ports in the first place as can be seen here.

If you look around carefully the 4x4 can be picked up at a much more reasonable price. Having said that I also have an 8x8 sat in the corner at the moment waiting for it's new assignment.

Do you mean the same M-Audio or other brands? I've seen a couple M-Audio on eBay, but judging by the pictures... they were used as footrest :?

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong direction. Basically what happens is that I have 2 keyboards now, but the Atari has only 1 MIDI IN input. How I can solve it? I thought about to get a 4x4.

The steinberg midex had a midi in as I remember along with an additional set of outs. The midiman minimac interface had an additional midi in and out and works on the falcon, TT and mega STe as they have the mac like LAN port built in

Yes the MIDEX would be ideal as it has SMPTE in/out, 3 MIDI IN, 5 MIDI OUT and 4 dongle slots. But I guess it will be difficult to get one these days.

Yes, it says "Using the keyboard's MIDI output, connect the cable to the USB port on your computer". That's because I said that I'm not 100% sure it will work the other way around.

Barrie at keychange may well have some, however they do not work on falcons and possibly not on TT's either

Another alternative is a MIDI merge box and a cheap serial to MIDI interface. I may even have one of those knocking around somewhere

Aren't MIDI merge boxes the M-Audi MIDISPORT or the MOTU Express? Maybe I'm totally confused then.

For what do you need the serial to MIDI interface?

Philip Rees used to do a reasonably priced MIDI merge box which are not to be confused with the MIDISport interfaces, the idea behind the serial interface was to allow 2 discreet MIDI outs
