I have to admit, the endless creation of C64 hardware SID synths flooding the internet and Ebay make my blood boil with jealousy. Finally, someone has created a high quality AY-3891X hardware synth called the "hard plAYer". Since the AY-3891X is virtually identical to the Atari ST Yamaha YM2149 chip, it's capable of playing songs in .YM file format from standard SD or MMC cards in addition to its MIDI capabilities!
Check out the YouTube demonstration!

Hopefully, the creator of the the hard plAYer can enlighten us as to how this unit can be purchased and give us more information!

That thing is badass! There looks to me to be a goodnews-badnews scenario. He gives full technical detail as to the construction of this thing, and at the bottom, he mentions all of the information is public, aka "freeware". Thus, it cannot be sold or distributed. The only hope of getting one of these without building it is if he would decide to offer them.
That thing really is wicked
