3 and 5-Way Independant Outputs on the Atari ST/STe

Post by Atari Music Network »

If you've ever wanted to add separate effects for each of the Atari's YM channels through a mixer, check out this video by the486kid as he hacks an STf YM2149 to deliver 3 independent 1/4" line outputs.

Very cool! However, for those less technically inclined, I wonder if the486kid or someone else would do a step by step how-to guide to others can perform this mod. I would also like to more about how a 5-way audio output would work on the STe and perhaps if a similar hack would work on a Falcon YM3139.

Also, there's a warning on his video that states: if you perform a similar mod on your ST, that you be aware that you may encounter difficulty with 8bit sample playback through the YM (ie: ProTracker) as this requires an even mono mix of the channels for reliable recreation of the sample playback. Additionally, the stock YM setup achieves a bit of natural compression that is lost due to the channel separation. You have been warned, if you value the stock characteristic sound, proceed with caution

I need to do this for my STe.

...and I'd love for you to have the ability to perform this hardware hack so we can plaster it's coolness all over the Internet! I already tried contacting the486kid for an article submission a couple months ago before this site launched but he wasn't very responsive. Maybe if we pester him enough then he'll come around...
