A dongle work with all versions?

Post by atarisince1989 »

Apologies for my ingnorance. I saw a couple of offers at eBay, and I was wondering if a dongle would work with any Cubase version? or is it designed to work only for the version of software released with? Thanks a lot.

What the dongle will work with is usually on a sticker in the side of the case. One thing to note with Cubase for Atari dongles, if they are blue, they will only work with Cubase 1 or 2, cubase 3 and cubase audio (Either the ST version for use with the Yamaha DBX recorders or the Falcon version) are a burgundy/deep red colour.

If the dongle is to fit on the printer/parallel port, it is of no use to an ST user, regardless of its colour.

If you have a link, I'd be happy to at least have a look over the auction.

Had a quick look, he seems to think this is an early version so may well be version 1 or 2, so either Cubase or Cubase Score. IF it is an earlier version then it will only work with the ST's, not the TT or Falcon.

Best bet is ask what the dongle colour is and what it says on the side, if your after a specific version such as version 3, your best bet is email barrie@keychange.co.uk

The seller has replied to me:

"the dongle is black & has 'cubase' written on the side - it is most likely the very first version as the manuals publishing date is 1989"

Will that dongle work with later versions?

Probably with version 2, but definitely not version 3, for that you need the burgundy dongle. Having said that though, many legit owners of version 2 used the cracked version anyhow as the dongle calls slowed the programs MIDI responses down, especially if you had more than one MIDI port.

Cubase 3 would be the way to go to be honest, or the MCA crack of version 2.01

The reason why I wanted to buy a legitimate copy is because my Falcon came with a cracked Cubase 3.01, but it crashes very often. It drives me crazy when the bombs appear and the program crashes in the middle of editing a song :x

I'll download the MCA cracked version, as you suggested, and see if it works better (more stable).

Thanks again for all the info.

I was going to ask whereabouts in the world you are, then saw you are in Edinburgh (We were there only 3 weeks ago and will be there again at the end of November for our annual visit :)).

Anything before version 3 will not work on the Falcon on the MIDI only line anyhow, and as I mentioned, Barrie from Keychange always seems to have Cubase dongles in stock and can supply them anywhere in the world.

As a side note, if you have any hardware issues, Simbo over at the Atari Gorum is not far from you in Glasgow.

Great, let me know when you come back, and we could have a pint together :D

Yesterday I installed the MCA cracked version on my Falcon and I was playing around already. I only noticed that seems to be a bit slower on the screen, like things take longer to refresh?

Yes, I had a look, and I'm planning to send an e-mail asking for prices.

I was considering also to bring my Atari 520STE (which I upgraded a bit with 4MB RAM, TOS 2.06 and UltraSatan) to the living room and use it as main MIDI computer, It's just I'm running out of space

Yes, I know :D Someday I have to meet him. I have been in contact in the past about technical things and he seems a guru in the subject.

Cubase 1.x/2.x have a black dongle
Cubase 3.X/ Cubase Score have a red dongle
Cubase Audio has another red dongle.
I think the blue one was for TwentyFour.

The versions don't work with dongles for other versions.

Even the legal versions of Cubase 2 and 3 are not stable on the Falcon. You'll have to use Cubase Audio.
Kind regardz,
