MIST: MIDI capable STE remake

Post by MasterOfGizmo »

The MIST Atari STE HDL remake has just gotten a new MIDI interface and is e.g. able to run cubase. Since this is a hardware remake and not an emulation the delay and latency is as good as a real Atari ST.

The MIST is available from Lotharek http://lotharek.pl/product.php?pid=96. The MIDI add-on will be available asap.

That is quite an impressive setup and one that helps to preserve the ST as a MIDI making force into the future.

In the meantime the board got support for SM194 video which means that it supports a video resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. The result is pretty useful when running Cubase:

The machine has a MIDI latency identical to the real as (as it's real hardware and no emulation). In Mega STE mode the cpu is faster than a real Mega STE and with the high rez video the system has 8MB ST RAM. When run on standard ST high at 640x400 pixels it has 14MB of ST RAM.

I'd love to see someone making serious music with it. That would mean that all the hours spent on the MIDI implementation was well invested ...

Forgot to mention: The MIST as currently sold does not support MIDI out of the box. But if you dare to solder a small connector to the board you may contact me for one of my MIDI addon prototypes.

More details about the addon here:

Hopefully Lotharek will soon prepare complete MIDI enabled MiST's.

A MIDI enabled system would be a true replacement for an ST in a studio and with the last screenshot, if it can run at higher speeds than a stock ST series machine, replacement for a TT a well.

While we all love these machines an would love to keep them going, there will have to be a point when hardware like this takes over to keep the spirit alive

Or you use those robust remakes to protect your original gear. The clones usually don't have any mechanical parts.

The MIDI capabilities of the MIST atari ST core have recently been improved. Some MFP and ACIA bugs have been fixed and the MIDI timing seems to be perfect now and also MIDI IN and OUT work as expected.

The MIST can run Cubase in STEroids mode which is roughly ATARI TT speed. It comes with 14MB of ST RAM. This together with the 1280x1024 video mode makes it a pretty useful MIDI machine.

Wow that is good to know as I had forgotten about the project since it first began.

There has been more improvement and the timing has been fine tuned. The timing is now extremely exact as can be read in this thread:

http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.ph ... 6&start=25

The latest adjustments have now resulting in a timing so close to perfect that two MISTs can independently replay MIDI over a long period of time without getting out of sync. I am confident the precision reached by now is even better than that of a real ST.

And as a bonus: MIDI also works when the MIST runs in Amiga mode:

Just bought one of these.

Would be cool if it could support the cartridge based MIDI expansions somehow.
It would greatly contribute to cementing it to my studio ;)

Right now one MIDI out is a bit crippling for serious productions.
Just adding support for serial over USB would be wonderful.
It would mean that one could use a Emagic/C-Lab Export expansion at least.
It's supported in all the major sequencers. Logic, Notator, Cubase etc.

I don't have many worthly synthetizers to work with midi so I don't think I'll use it much with Cubase, but anyway the hours working on it were not spent for nothing, because it's very useful to be able to enter midi notes with my master keyboards in Trackers such as Maxymiser or MusicMon! Thank you for that!

On the other hand, I also own a Roland D110 so I might use it more in the future, with my MiST.
