Falcon wont mount internal or ext. hard drives?

Post by Feedbaxlow »

Hey,
Just dug my much loved falcon out of the closet, I've owned/used almost every ST version until this one with Cubase to create hundreds of Industrial, Techno and House tracks... some of them put out on records even...This has Cubase Audio installed (still have dongle, all disks and manual) but can't get the the internal drive to mount now!
BTW I DO GET THE DESKTOP including floppies "A and B"
I remember this would happen occasionally and i would install the Icons... and something would eventually connect them with the drive partitions but i can't remember how i did it anymore (!?) or it's just not working anymore, I'm not sure which.
I have an external SCSI Drive attached (to save audio files)... it settles just fine but i can't remember how to or it just wont mount either.

I feel like an idiot (it has been ten years!) and i've tried every menu option (for hours) i can find, but so far no luck.
Can anyone HELP!!!!!

Hi, just a quick update for others first. I've been in email correspondence and passed on as much info as I can.

So, next step, any updates as to how far you have got with this?

Progress... yes, thanks to your help mal, and Uwe's software (HDDRIVER) i got the external hard drive up and running last night. You were right, The original Falcon 80 Mb hard drive went south. I could tell because i could hear it straining to get up to speed several times and then... silence.
Waiting now for 2 new-to-me 20Gig Laptop drives (on Mal's recommendation) to arrive from ebay seller~ $17 for the both. (Let me know if anyone wants drives, found a decent source for tested, used drives)
In the meantime i got the old external 1Gig drive formatted and partitioned and once the driver was installed, they came up as drives C & D.
New Prob: Unfortunately i cannot find my Steinberg Cubase Audio Red dongle...I have the red audio clock and it's been so long that I totally forgot that was not a dongle... ye olde cartridge port wants Steinberg stuffing too and that's why i get the "sorry no dongle, goodbye!" message as the Prg. load fails. Argggh.
I emailed Barrie@keychange.co.uk in case i don't find my original dongle. Not sure if he is still there or can help me...I'll keep you posted.
Cheers! and thanks to mal7921!

Barrie is still around and generally does email back, so give him a little time. I've occasionally had to email a couple of times but not usually.

IN the meantime there are 2 cracks of Cubase Audio hosted here. I've tested the MCA one and that works ok and at some point I'll check the other one out on my test falcon (Before it's traded in for a C-Lab one).

Falcon: partitioning hard drives?

Post by Feedbaxlow »

Yup...thanks, I noticed the new crack posted and downloaded it already, will give it a try.
Also the "Indispensable Software" List is very helpful and intriguing. I'm studying it and researching.
I've missed a lot in the years since i decommissioned my Falcon in 2000. I'm amazed by the variety of programs available on Atari now and the vibrancy of Atari community (or at least some members of it) and I'm psyched to get into some midi tracking AGAIN very soon.

NEWSFLASH!!!! Got the hard drives sorted! :D

OK.. I figured it out... or rather stumbled onward regardless of not being able to figure it out ;)
now things are starting to make a bit of sense...despite assurances here and there that Atari TOS 4.04 can see larger than 1 Gig partitions...I have not had any success with partitions larger than 1 Gig.
Anyone can Let me know if there's any way or need to do that in TOS.
But i really doubt i will ever need that much space as i survived with lots of leftover space while storing my Cubase docs on the old 80Mb Falcon Hard Drive... So i have loads of IDE drive space leftover in case i decide to use Mint at some point!
Now onto sorting the clock issues out! :)
I want to Thank you guys for being here to reference and study and especially "Mal7921" for having the patience and ability to work with
someone as naive as myself about Atari basics...I'm learning bit by bit what Atari talk means and the basic protocols of the system and hardware.
THANKS!!!!
Best Regards, Feedbaxlow
